How to Research Your Favorite Hotel, Resort Or Vacation Destination

The internet is a wonderful place to research your favorite hotel, resort or vacation destination. In fact, because of this easy-to-access information hotels and tourist attractions alike are having to pay extra special attention to their customers. They’re now also forced to make sure their hotel rooms, park trails, and restaurant floors are especially clean. There are just too many ways for the common person to make his opinion known.
    Go Daddy $7.49 .com Sale!

Let’s start with the easiest place to do research…TripAdvisor. TripAdvisor has millions of reviews on everything. In fact, when you search for a hotel on Yahoo, TripAdvisor is who pops up after you’ve selected the hotel you’re interested in. And beyond the reviews, people have profile’s on TripAdvisor that you can access and actually ask questions about the person’s experience or review. It’s probably the most commonly used site to do vacation research.

Now for a bit more obscure but often more helpful…Flickr. Flickr is a photo sharing site where millions of people have posted their vacation and travel photos. If you’re headed to Jamaica and aren’t sure which of their waterfalls you want to visit, search Flickr for the name of that waterfall. You’ll likely find tons of photos from the place and will really be able to tell if the waterfall is just a trickle down the side of a hill, or a beautiful gusher off the side of a mountain.

Finally, Facebook is another great place to look. There are lots of groups on Facebook where people talk about their experiences. The group My Favorite Place To Take Kids On Vacation Is…has great postings about places I’d never heard of before. For instance the Strong Museum in New York is a museum that celebrates “play”. They have toys, games and lots of hands-on exhibits. They even have a Mr. Potato Head exhibit with a life-size Mr. Potato Head. Groups like this are awesome for finding new places you’ve never heard of and to ask others what their experiences have been like.

If you want to check out that Facebook group, go here: OR HERE

Otherwise, read about my favorite place on earth, great ideas for taking kids on vacation and my reviews of some famous destinations at

Do You Have a Passion For Travel?

Do you have a passion for travel? Is it in your blood and you’re always looking for new places to travel and visit? How about helping others travel? Do you love sharing your trips with people in hopes they go there as well? Have you ever helped someone plan a trip? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then this article is for you.

Travel is my passion; I’ve lived in 12 states, visited 25 countries and am looking for new experiences every day. I one day decided that I really ought to turn this passion for travel into an income stream. If I’m going to be looking at travel websites, suggesting places and clipping cool places to visit from magazines, what’s stopping me from turning this great hobby into a business.

So I checked out different companies that help you become a travel agent and found a great one that fits all my needs. You have to pay a nominal fee to get started, but with that fee you get a website like Travelocity, customer support, travel agency insurance, access to travel agent rate trips, good research, back-end booking tools, internet links to include in my blog postings and Facebook page and lots of training. (Fortunately training is more like fun to me, so bring on the training).

If you desire to take your passion for travel to the next level, check out the many internet companies that enable people to become travel agents. Be wary of any hype you see and be wary of any warnings you see. There are many internet travel agencies out there and they all like to ‘bash’ each other on the internet, so don’t believe what you read from third parties. Go directly to the different companies websites and learn what you can learn.

The method by which I’ve taken to turn my passion into profits has been very rewarding; the one thing I truly love is having turned my passion for travel into profits. I now enjoy teaching people how to do it on their own and enjoy writing about it in articles and on my blog.

Contact me if you’d like to do the same. tri4time@hotmail.com

Who Wants To Go To Costa Rica?

So I’m planning to take the kids to Costa Rica next March for a short adventure. I decided I’d better become a Costa Rica Specialist if I’m going to go there, so yesterday I finished all the classes and got my certificate. I must say there is a lot going on in Costa Rica.

For the kids, I think Costa Rica will be a fantastic vacation place. They’ve got volancoes that spit lava into the air, Macaw’s that fly from the jungle to the mangroves at night in a big swath of red flying across the sky, zip lines tours, aerial trams, monekys, sloths, butterflys, crocodiles, beaches, snorkeling. . .the list goes on and on.
    Go Daddy $7.49 .com Sale!

If you’re up for going to Costa Rica March of 2010, let me know. I’m going to plan a pretty fun trip for kids. In the meantime, if you’re just looking for fun places to take kids, check out My Facebook Group for that very purpose.

Otherwise, I’m also an Austria, Romania and Croatia Specialist if you’re looking to travel to any of those places! Now I can add Costa Rica Specialist to that list. Ciao!

    What is YTB?

A few people have asked me what is YTB, which is strange because the answer is quite simple, really. YTB is Travelocity, it’s Orbitz, it’s 1-800 Flowers, it’s Ticketmaster and it’s Hotels.com all rolled into one. The difference between YTB and any of the others is not its scope or wide variety of products, it’s the business model.

Network marketing is a business model just like a sole proprietorship, a franchise, a hub-and-spoke, or a corporation with branches. The founders of YTB felt the only way to compete with the big boys like Orbitz was to use word-of-mouth marketing instead of trying to out advertise them.

Seriously, Expedia was bought for $5 billion dollars at one point and they spend gazillions on advertising. How do you compete with that? You could set-up a franchise type deal with YTB stores in every mall, but you and I both know that you use the internet to book travel.

So if you’re going to go to the internet, you’re going to need a lot of mouths talking about your company – thus network marketing. So what is ytb? It’s a network marketing company, which is publicly traded, where the individual business owners peddle travel booking engines. You’re probably familiar with Pampered Chef, Discovery Toys, Avon . . . they’re all the same type of business model.

There are some advantages to using a YTB site to book your travel. (If there weren’t, they’d go out of business). 1 is the number of things you can do on one site. Did you know they have 5 hotel booking engines on the hotel tab? How about almost all the major cruise lines including Disney? How about a system that remembers your preferences when you log-in? YTB is great product in the company of great competition.

If you’re interested in signing up for YTB or learning more, feel free to contact me. I can give you all the details you need and tell you how to get started.

Make Commissions From Event or Travel Tickets

There’s a pretty easy way to make commissions from event or travel tickets. If you have a travel site or blog where you talk about places you travel, having a link to buy airlines tickets or hotel reservations would be an ideal targeted monetization model.

I own clippershiptravel.com, a site that offers all the ticketing and traveling features of the big travel sites like Expedia and Travelocity. In fact, clippershiptravel.com’s booking engine is the same booking engine Travelocity uses, so you can be assured that the prices, fares, and ticketing will rival at least Travelocity.

Any particular page within the site is linkable and building a widget to linked photo to that part is easy as well. For instance, here’s a link to great cruise deals that I’ll make commissions on. I could easily insert a photo of a cruise ship here and say ‘click here’ for great cruise deals.

There are a few services out there that enable you these options to monetize your travel blog or site. But in addition to travel, you’ll be able to feature concert tickets, flowers, and even Crab Cakes affiliate program.

There’s no better travel ticket affiliate system or event ticket affiliate system on the net.

If you’re interested to explore this idea further, contact me at facebook.com/danrmorris or tri4time@hotmail.com or leave me a comment here.

How To Choose A Home-Based Business

Why even write this article?  Mainly because most people don’t realize what kinds of businesses are available and most don’t realize that successful home businesses require some work. So that being the case, some advice on how to make this decision could be life changing and lead you closer to making a successful decision.

Let’s start by saying that the home-based business is the last great American tax shelter.  It’s an opportunity to turn your ordinary expenses like rent, mortgages, utilities,  and lawn maintenance into tax deductible expenses. If you don’t know what that means here’s a quick way to understand it. Your income determines what tax you owe the government. If you’re in the 10% tax bracket and you make $30,000 – then you owe the government $3,000 in taxes. Now if you’re allowed to subtract some of your normal expenses from your income, then your taxable income is lower. Let’s say you have $5,000 in expenses (rent, utilities, etc) – then your new income is $25,000 and now you only owe $2,500 to the government. Just by having a home-based business you will have saved yourself $500 in taxes. That’s cash in your pocket. I don’t give specific tax advice so talk to your accountant about the specifics or buy this great book and learn for yourself.

Now, if your business expenses are tax deductible expenses – wouldn’t it be good to deduct some other things you’re already going to pay for this year? This is the first lesson in choosing your home-based business – figure out what you like to do and already spend time and money doing it. Do you have hobbies? Do you travel? Do you go to cooking shows, take cooking classes? Do you spend time and money going to NASCAR events? Figure this out – it’s important because it ultimately gives you two advantages. If your business is based on things you like doing – you’ll probably spend more time on it and will be more successful. And if your business is also your hobby – pursuing a profit from that hobby makes the expenses tax deductible.  That’s a win-win situation.

Now you must decide what format of business to start, this is different than figuring out the subject of your business. You’ve got several options like starting a business from scratch (such as a lemonade stand) like deciding to sell quilts you make.  You could become a franchisee or a rep. of a business that already has a business model like selling Pampered Chef equipment. A little less common is becoming an affiliate on-line and making a ‘commission’ by selling other people’s products and services through links. Network marketing is a solid option as well and usually gives you the opportunity to sell products and to get paid by helping the network marketing company grow. And finally you could build a website of your own and combine all of those things. Either way – no matter what you choose the business is yours and you must act like you have a business and run it like you have a business.

So how do you figure this out? Some of this depends on the time you have available – but more importantly what kind of time you’re willing to re-prioritize to the business. Watch this 6:30 second video and hear what Robert Kiyosaki has to say about this. If your goal is financial freedom, then you  need to consider the residual income opportunities of each model. Making quilts and selling them to neighbors is a good idea if you like making quilts and have run out of room to hang them. But once you’ve made your last quilt – the income ends. That doesn’t mean you should run from the quilt idea. Let’s just figure out how to turn that quilt hobby into a business that will pay you while you sleep. What about creating a website around quilts? There’s a great service out there that will help you do just that. It’s called SiteBuildit and it helps you from beginning to end. They help you figure out what to call it, how to make money from it, how to build it, how to make sure people find it, etc. They’re the best if you have a hobby but don’t know anything about building a website. This is a way to sell your quilts, make money after you’ve made your last quilt, turn your quilt making into a tax deductible activity and profit from something you enjoy.

Building a website does take more prep time than becoming a franchisee, rep or working for a network marketing company. Where building your own website is open to any subject, choosing an existing company that fits is a little bit less open. For instance, I don’t know of a network marketing company that is somehow related to quilts – but there may be. Contact me if you’re interested in this but need help finding one – they’re not necessarily easy to find. They do run the gamut though- from health to travel to auto to kitchen to self-help tools. There really are a lot out there. This model typically provides residual income that keeps paying you long after you’re done working, takes little prep work to get ready and has a good support system in place. If the only thing you can think of when you hear network marketing is Amway, hassling your friends and home parties – think again. The internet has changed all that. Some of the most successful network marketers haven’t had a single party and have only recruited people who were already on-line looking for a network marketing opportunity.

Lastly, and easily combined with the rest is the on-line affiliate. Many, many companies provide personalized links to their products and services. When people click on these links and then buy products at that website – you get paid a commission.  Think about it this way, imagine telling your friends that you just say The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons and then getting paid when those friends see the movie. I mean, if you are doing the marketing for them, shouldn’t you get paid? They’re obviously profiting from your word-of-mouth marketing help. This is the way on-line affiliates work. This is a good option for people who love doing stuff on-line – but doesn’t necessarily provide long term income. This is a good one to combine with the rest.

Start by figuring out what you like to do. Watch that video and decide what kind of business you want to start. Check out SiteBuildIt and learn about building your own site. Talk to your accountant or buy that tax book so you know what kinds of expenses to start tracking AND contact me if you need any help. Having your own business is cool. Having one that is so successful you can quit your job – that’s priceless (as they say on the commercials).

What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

How many times were you asked that growing up? How about now? It seems the frequency you get asked that question diminshes as you get older. As if you’re finished- finished picking what you’re going to be or finished growing up. What’s more interesting is the idea that you have that choice when you’re young. I mean you do have a choice – but you’re just not armed with the right ‘decision making tools’.  Teacher’s say ‘ you’re good at math, you could be an engineer’ or ‘you’re good at music, maybe you’ll be a music teacher when you grow up’. When you’re in 5th grade it seems every girl wants to be a marine biologist or teacher or doctor – and the guys want to play football or basketball or be president. But what’s crazy is what we end up being might just be who we already are.

Since birth, and before actually, I’ve been on the move. I’m not sure you could call it traveling when you actually live where you travel to, but in the end it’s travel. And to some degree it’s actually better than just visiting a place for the weekend. By 5th grade, I’d already lived in Wyoming, Ohio, Florida, Texas, Washington state and Alaska. But I never answered “I want to be a travel advisor”. For a while I wanted to be a truck driver, then a farmer, then President, then no idea.  I even took those personality profile tests in high school that told you what careers you’d be good at.  I think accountant, business analyst and lawyer were on that list. (Crazily, I actually like those things and think I could’ve been good at them). Anyway, nothing you’ll probably be good at has anything to do with what you’ll probably like.

Maybe you don’t really change as you grow up, it’s just that you are offered more opportunities and are drawn to the ones you like. For instance if you really like helping people, are a good listener and have always wanted to be a candy-striper,  maybe you’d jump at the chance to visit a nursing school.  See. . . because you already liked it – you gravitated toward the nursing school idea.  Had someone invited you to the Auto/Diesel College you may have said ‘no’ and thus you wouldn’t have ever considered that kind of profession. Again, maybe what you become is really what you are.

After high school I did the college thing, executive assistant, waiter, manager and then went looking for business jobs. But I’m a travel guy. I can talk travel for ever. If I’ve never been to the place we’re talking about, I’ve already got 52 questions. In fact I learned how to correctly pronounce ‘Tehran’ today after meeting a Persian from Iran. And after 35 years of being a travel guy, the opportunity to be an independent travel agent, travel advisor and internet marketer of travel ‘fell in my lap’. And what’s really funny about this 35 year journey back to the beginning, is now I can’t think of any cooler job.

Not only is it fun to talk about travel, help people figure out what they want to do on their vacation, and meet other people who like to travel – but the IRS makes travel a tax-deductible expense for me. Oh yeah, I also get to travel cheap on travel agent rates, and make money helping others travel. I get to write travel reviews and get paid for it. I get to visit resorts and make money. I get to spend my evenings researching travel ideas, writing this blog, becoming an affiliate with different tour agencies and more. Who would have guessed that what I am is what I do. When someone asks me what I want to be when I grow up? I can say – I want to be a good dad, but I want to pay for it by helping people travel.

Tell me - are you making your income doing what you are?
